Ben On the Jews

My old friend, the recently married Ben Dreyfus, has an op-ed in the Forward this week. A very interesting argument that he's been making for several years.

Very interesting article indeed, and it raised two questions for me:

1) Is there a proven approach to winning over linguistic control? Is it even possible, or have the Democrats just been terrible at it?

2) The complaint about a two-dimensional spectrum is familiar -- the refrain of the libertarians. They clearly haven't been successful in convincing many people that old political categories are failing us. Does Ben have any chance? There are 2,000 years of normative, post-Temple Jewish practice against 200 years of liberal Judaism -- an uphill battle to say the least.

Also, consider the name: "Reform" Judaism. It wasn't created ex nihilo, it was meant to reform the prevalent Orthodox practice. "Conservative," too -- to conserve many traditional elements that the Reform had dispensed with.

Which makes Ben's battle even harder... their comparison to pre-denominational Judaism is baked into the names.
