THE RECRUIT: The Sports Guy

THE RECRUIT: The Sports Guy devotees among you may have read part or all of a series in the Miami Herald that Simmons recommended, in which a reporter followed around Florida blue-chip football prospect Willie Williams on his various college recruiting trips. The pieces were funny for, among other reasons, Williams' obsession with food and his non-stop accounts of the exquisite meals lavished on him by Bobby Bowden, Larry Coker, and other big-name coaches.
The last piece, in which Williams visited the University of Florida, ran on Monday, before Williams signed with Miami yesterday. The reporter who wrote the story must have been caught napping, however, because today it was reported that Williams is facing three separate counts of assault stemming from his weekend in Gainesville- he allegedly hugged a woman without her permission and refused to let go, then later punched a man at a nightclub, and completed the trifecta by dislodging three fire extinguishers in a dorm the following morning.
Funny that the Herald reporter who was trailing Williams that weekend reported none of this, only that Williams "ate several meatballs," attended an all-black beauty pageant at which "they had guys come out," and ultimately decided UF wasn't for him because he "just didn't feel at home there... it's too farm like."
The various misdeeds may be enough to cost Williams his Miami scholarship.
