THE JOEL STEIN SHOW: CANCELED:

THE JOEL STEIN SHOW: CANCELED: Entertainment Weekly, after less than a year, has put the kibosh on Joel Stein's much-maligned back-page column, "The Joel Stein Show." Beginning with last week's issue, the back page had transformed into a "Stupid Questions For..." feature, taking the ESPN model, as opposed to Stein's Rick Reilly/George Will/Margaret Carlson mode.
A lot of people hated Stein's column, especially fans of the previous feature, "Encore." But I was a fan- Stein could be funny when he wanted to, and he wrote exactly the sort of column that I would write were I a columnist for Entertainment Weekly. Stein may have been kicked upstairs, however; he had a piece run in last week's issue of Time, for the first time in memory, and he's been appearing lately on both Comedy Central and Trio.

I loved Joel a lot. Or his column, I mean. I was really sad when EW cancelled it, but I love EW a lot too, so I didn't cancel my subscription or anything.
