Where Were You When…?

Here’s a Michele-introduced meme, and I have good stories for a few of them:

1. Where were you when you heard that Ronald Reagan died?
Standing in front of McSorely’s on E. 7th St. in Manhattan, when LilB called to tell me.

2. Where were you on September 11, 2001?
Trapped in Hoboken, just as Sheila was.

3. Where were you when you heard that Princess Diana died?
In the midst of an hours-long IM chat with my then-girlfriend.

4. Do you remember where you were when you heard Kurt Cobain had died?
Stopped into a convenience store on the way home from the airport after a week in Mexico; saw the newspaper headline.

5. Take one for The Gipper: What’s your favorite flavor of jelly bean?
Anything but black; Nat X was right.

6. Where were you when Magic Johnson announced he was retiring from the NBA due to AIDS?
I remember my dad told me, but not sure where I was.

7. Where were you when Reagan was shot?
I was only two years old, so I don’t really remember.

8.Where were you when the Challenger exploded?
I remember my mom telling me at the breakfast table.

9. Where were you when the 0J verdict was announced?
Oh, we had a TV set up in our high school newspaper office to watch it. Jeremy, who was there, commented at the time- and he was right- that “this is the defining moment of our generation. Isn’t that sad?”

1. After receiving the breaking news from Abe while sitting in front of my computer at home, I got on the phone to Steve.

2. Working in the basement of Wheelock College in Boston, and one of the maintenance guys mentioned, "Yeah, they just flew a plane into the World Trade Center."

3. On Christmas break, freshman year of college [author's note: neither "Christmas break" nor "freshman year" actually exist at Brandeis; I'm taking realistic license in order to be able to relate to other people normally], in my mom's living room. Didn't care much then, still don't today.

4. In my room in my old house in the Northeast, listening to (probably) WYSP.

5. None - I'm not a fan of jelly beans.

6. Garden of Earthly Delights, a comic/card store owned by Chuck Feldman in Northeast Philly; he was watching (and thus so was I) on a small black and white tv, commenting how this would instantly send the value of Magic's rookie card either through the roof or into the shitter.

7. Don't remember, too young at the time.

8. I first heard from another kid in the afternoon bus line in the gym in 3rd grade.

9. The Usdan student center giant TV at Brandeis, surrounded by cheering black students (yes, they were both watching).

lilB, how did you go nearly four months without hearing that Diana died? Or does Brandeis have Christmas Break before school begins in September?

She died right when I was starting my freshman year at college--late August/early September 1997.

1. With Steve in front of McSorley's.
2. Notre Dame Law School; first heard about it (before either of the towers collapsed) on car radio on the way to school, didn't know what was going on, then got the whole scoop as soon as I arrived and found hundreds of people glued to a big TV in the student lounge.
3. Shooting pool in Usdan basement at the 'Deis.
4. At home, watching CNN.
5. Pretty much all of them; the actual difference in taste between different flavors is very slight.
6. Don't remember.
7. Don't remember; in the crib, probably.
8. Watching it live on TV at school.
9. In photography class at my high school. We didn't have a TV set up, but word got around in the halls when the verdict was announced.

1. Walked into my friend's ahouse in time to see him watching the back stretch of the Belmont (note: it was shabbos, so its amazing that I heard before sundown)
2. Woken up b a phone call from Israel asing if I and my family were OK (also just in time to see the second plane hit on CNN). Then sat around Stamford on the pohone trying to find friends until 2pm when I had to drive up to work.
3. I heard about the crash in my car on the way to Gabe's ouse in Newton (first weekend of my Sophomore year at Brandeis) - LilB must have been thinking of a different Princess Diana... perhaps a family pet?
4. In a hotel in Poland... on the March of the Living... couldn;t get too depressed about it while visiting concentration camps
5. Agree with Steve on the black thing, but I guess purple
6. Can't remember... home I think, but I do remember him saying htat he'd "attained" the HIV Virus
7. not even 3 yet, so probably home
8. 3rd Grade... the 8th graders were talking baout it
9. Jerusalem... I found out just before the holiday (I think it was Yom Kippur) started that the jury was in, but I had to wait till the next day to find out what the verdict was.

ok ... i may have been wrong. frankly, i don't remember exactly when the diana car crash was, and to this day don't much care. however, it was the setting as i described it ... i was probably off date-wise. the fact remains, however, that "christmas break" is a non-existent entity at brandeis.

LilB... what year did you start Brandeis?
