"Quaffable But Not Transcendent"

A.O. Scott is rarely right, but I completely agree with the Times film critic's characterization of "Sideways" as "the most drastically overrated movie of 2004." Even if he is about the 30th person I've heard point out that critics liked it because most of them look like Paul Giamatti.

I agree. I haven't seen sideways, but from what I've read about it, it doesn't seem like the best movie or most original idea for a movie ever. For some reason if a film has Paul Giamatti in it, people thinks its god's great gift of a film...

To quote Scott, "The movie is well written and flawlessly acted, funny and observant"... that being said, whether you agree it is overrated or not, it doesn't mean that it wasn't a very fine film, and one of the better films of 2004. It just seems to have caught the fancy of many a middle aged, culinary snob/ failed author turned film critic.

paul giamatti also played pig vomit in "private parts." he also played an orangutan in the horrible remake of "planet of the apes."
