Ross G. Douthat on "Wedding Crashers":
How great it was to watch a movie in which the preppy asshole villain was also . . . a liberal Democrat. (And not just any liberal Democrat - an obvious parody of RFK Jr., right down to the sanctimonious Riverkeeper environmentalism.) This choice wasn't just funny, it was realistic - since most of the preppy assholes you meet these days aren't Rockefeller Republicans anymore, but trust fund liberals. (Well, okay, at least in the Northeast. The GOP is still the party of choice for Southern preppy assholes.)You sure? Sack Lodge seemed like a GOPer to me, but I guess everyone sees sneering, rich, "elitist" assholes as part of the opposite political team. Posted by Stephen Silver at August 9, 2005 06:18 PMThis reminds me of something, incidentally, that always annoyed me about the otherwise-classic Old School - namely, that the villainous, stick-up-his-ass dean (played by a pre-Ari Jeremy Piven) decorated his office with photos of himself with George Bush the Elder. Whereas in real life, an officious, anti-frat dean at a major university would never be a Republican. Not in a million years. (And sure, Dean Wormer probably voted for Nixon - but that was a very different time.)
An interesting theory put forth by that critic.
However, in order to make a fair judgement, I think I'll need to refer back to the video itself....time to go see the film again!
