The Tocchet Scandal

A major scandal broke today that may very well be to hockey what the 2002 steroid bombshell was to baseball. Former NHL All-Star and current Phoenix assistant coach Rick Tocchet has been arrested and charged with running a multi-state, multi-million dollar gambling ring that allegedly included several NHL players, reputed mobsters, and the wife of Wayne Gretzky. In addition, reports out of Philadelphia suggest that numerous other local figures are involved, including members of the media.

On a personal note, Tocchet is Becca's favorite athlete of all time, and so she's taking this especially hard. Having lived through the Kirby Puckett scandal, I know how she feels.

Wasn't Tocchet a member of the Flyers?

Hockey gets is fair share of scandals, they just don't get reported because, well most of the US doesn't care about hockey, but will shut down when Antonio Davis' wife throws coffee on someone.

There was the junior hockey sex scandal where a coach sexually abused two players who made it to the NHL;

There is of course the bizarre murder for hire plot by a St. Lousi Blues player;

There is of course the financial misdeeds of former LA Kings boss, Bruce McNall, and the former owners of the Buffalo Sabres;

You might also remember when former North Star Dan Quinn was accused of raping a woman at the Thunderbird Hotel, with Mario Lemieux in the room.

The list goes on . . .

The difference being I'm guessing very few people outside the state of Minnesota actually could tell you what the Kirby Puckett scandal was.
