Two Thoughts on the Soriano Contract

1. The Phillies at this point pretty much have to pursue Manny Ramirez. I don't know that they have any other choice.

2. While the Tribune Co. is firing reporters and editors at its newspapers from coast to coast, it's good that they were able to find the money to spend $136 million on a baseball player. And they wonder why they're failing at both.

Pithy, but there is more to the story. Trubune's media services are losing money while the Cubs make money. Also the Cubs will be sold either in a complete disintegration of the Tribune, or in simply a one-piece transaction. Tribune is spending for what may be some productive years and will have nothing to do with the Cubs when the contract becomes an ablatross.
