Picking Palin

I go into why, ultimately, John McCain will regret picking Sarah Palin, in a special North Star column.

I think you missed the most important point - I am one of those democrats that would consider voting for McCain. At least the McCain pre-2008. I like his history of standing up for what he believes is right regardless of his party platform. I may not agree with him always, but I respect his honesty to himself and his constituency. The GOP has corrupted his independent streak and it shows in his VP nomination. He should have picked Lieberman like he wanted.

He'll regret picking Palin over Lieberman because of all the moderate democrats that now are scared away from the ultra-conservative Palin and her supporters. The pick shows me that the GOP has more of grip on his balls than he does. It likely will make my decision at the poll a much easier one.

BTW - Don't lose fact that "hockey mom's" are rich - hockey ain't cheap. And no one in the south gives a crap about hockey.

And as someone who went to the NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta this year, I can say nobody in hockey gives a crap about the South, either.

You missed the boat on her completely, Steve. Yes, she energizes the base, but she also plays extremely well at the margins with the people who voted for Hillary in the later primaries. McCain doesn't need MOST of those voters. He just needs ENOUGH of them and in the places that matter.
