Obviously it was stupid, and Obama, to his credit, apologized immediately. Even the Wall Street Journal editorial page gives him a pass:

The best response came from Special Olympics bowling champion Kolan McConiughey, who has bowled five perfect games in the past four years and challenged the President to a match. "He bowled a 129.
