This gets to the hidden subtext of this strained and confused article - non-religious Zionism is in danger. It lacks the intellectual and emotional foundation to withstand irrational international criticism, so the author needs to make himself look good in front of his American and European friends, saying essentially "I'm a good Jew, those are the bad Jews, they're the problem."
