Hug It Out, Bitch

The Denver Post ran a long piece last week about “man hugs”- providing cogent analysis of the different ways men hug each other. Valuable information, for anyone who’s ever found himself in an awkward handshake/hug dilemma (and I think that’s all of us).

However, for some reason the piece leaves completely unmentioned the catchphrase “hug it out, bitch,” as popularized by Jeremy Piven’s agent character, Ari Gold, on “Entourage.” Ari, at least, was given recognition in a New York Times piece last week as one of the greatest characters in recent television history. I think next year I’m calling my fantasy football team “The AriGolds.”

At least we know, as opposed to "man dates," that "man hugs" actually do happen.

There are actually some people who do not get HBO. Hard to believe, I know and as Sports Guy said if you don't have HBO there is not point in having cable. But it is fun to spring "Hug it out, bitch" on people who have not seen the show. A particular cousin declined the hand shake and moved it for the hug and I gave him "let's hug out it, bitch". The look of shock and amusement on his face was priceless.

The better story is that when my wife was upset with me for no particualr reason (somewhat redundant, yes). I went in for the "I'm sorry and the hug" and she busted it out with "You think you can hug it out and everything will be alright?". My laughter ruined my sincerity.

I just slug a guy in the nuts if he tries to hug me...

Seriously, getting a hug when you expect a handshake is kind of socially awkward, and I am not against men hugging at all (unless the other guy grabs my rump). It just depends on the closeness of the relationship, if someone hugs you that you have only met a few times it feels weird, but if it is a close friend or someone you haven't seen in a while who is close to you, then it fells OK.
