A Brief Review of David Lee Roth's Radio Show

Oh, it's bad. So, so bad. It's a disaster on the level of "The Chevy Chase Show" or "The Magic Hour" or "Ishtar." Since Roth has never really done comedy or talk radio, whose bright idea was it to give him a comedy talk radio show? At least his West Coast counterpart, Adam Carolla, used to host the great "Loveline" radio edition.

When the Roth show dies- and I can't imagine it won't be a few months- I hope CBS Radio is smart enough to put Carolla on nationwide. Either that, or they'll give a national (or at least East Coast-wide) forum to the brilliant Kidd Chris Show, now on locally on Philly's WYSP after stints in Sacramento and San Antonio. I've been listening almost daily since it debuted in October and can honestly say it's up there with the best of the Stern show.

O&A have been goofing on Roth too. "Bosey-bosey-bop!" I get the feeling Dave will come out of it fine no matter what.

Maybe Hagar should get a shot too.

I have to say it's more entertaining than I thought it'd be. It's kind of like watching a train wreck. I can't stop!

The show is great cum discuss it at www.diamonddavidleeroth.com?

Diamond Dave is better than I thought, getting better every day!

a friend from NYC sent me a copy of Roth's show...I am a HUGE Howard Stern fan and now only listen to Sirius but I was curious as to hwo Roth would do....one word : HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

I imagine listeners are leaving in droves!!! what a bomb...what a disaster..I loved Roth in Van Halen and think he is one of the greatest frontmen in rock history but as a radio host HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: blake at January 12, 2006 04:10 PM

Roth is a sound bite. He says the same one liners over and over and over. The show has nothing. It's boring. Just like every other morning radio show. A guy and girl team reading from the newspaper and asking people to call in. WOW!! What a new and clever concept. Where do I sign up for Sirius?

Posted by: Jerry Pae at January 12, 2006 10:04 PM

Diamond Dave sucks ,gotdamm what a fucking LAME piese of shit!!

Posted by: ron jeremy at January 18, 2006 07:52 PM

David Lee speaks three langeges, that makes him the king of the radios! Wach out Rush limbar! David Lee is a winner and king of all medias! Roth all the way poeples!

Posted by: oprah at January 23, 2006 11:37 AM

Stern sucked ass to begin with. Comedy radio talk shows take a while to get their groove. I imagine Roth will get better as he goes, he is one of the funniest sound bites on the Earth.

Dallas has completely lost me as a listener in the mornings. I find David Lee Roth to be unlistenable. I have tried to be patient, and give him a chance to get his show in order, but I fail to find one redeeming quality in his program. He is an arrogant ass who thinks that throwing out big words and inane sayings make him sound intelligent. They don't. He obviously feels he is more intelligent than everyone else, and he doesn't connect with listeners in any way. His show comes across as a abrasive vaudeville monologue, instead of something that actually makes you want to listen. I will not continue to torture myself waiting for David Lee Roth to discover that he cannot hold an audience by being a pompous ass, and laughing at his own horrible jokes. Not to mention that he interrupts guests / callers constantly. I'd rather listen to music, or nothing, until I can get to work and listen to the Adam Corolla morning show on the internet. Who the hell says “speak to that” anyway? And that pedophile voice he uses when talking to women makes my skin crawl. And I’m a guy. Thanks for ruining morning radio you pseudo intellectual poser. Go read your thesaurus for some more smart sounding words, and leave people that want to actually be entertained alone. P.S. If you guys want to listen to the funniest afternoon show of all time, check out Russ Martin / Dallas / Free FM / Afternoons. Peace.

Roth has something that all the radio talk show hosts lack in a big way from the perspective of average males. He's lived the life of a HUGE rockstar. Take into account the fact that he was the front man for arguably the greatest rock band of the 80's and you get a guy who has lived life beyond what most can phathom.

Say what you will about his arrogance or what have you (what radio show host doesn't come across as arrogant?). He is in my opinion a breath of fresh air and a welcomed change from the parade of strippers and other talentless zeros that stern would use to fill up 3/4 of his radio show with. Roth has had a very enviable life and can speak from experience about a lot of things which is something many of these guys can not do.

The David Lee Roth Show is UNLISTENABLE. SIRIUS IS WORTH THE MONEY. YES FOR HOWARD BUT I LOVE THE MUSIC AND SPORTS. FREE FM SUCKS.

Posted by: Jake at February 11, 2006 10:46 PM

Roth blows, he blows hard. I urge all of you who agree to go onto the freeFM site and enter into the comments section just how you feel about this pompus dick. As for his level of inteligence, i feel as though he has an army of people out there reading scholarly material and giving him 20 second soundbites on their inteligence. Any smarts you think he has is only skin deep. I have switched to AM radio. Agree or disagree, is it just me or will the rest of you kill someone if he uses that phrase again? Lets have someone call in and speak to that.

Posted by: at February 14, 2006 08:08 AM

I tried, I really did. But I loath to wake up every morning to his bellowing on about mindless thoughts of his that have completely no rational backing. I was dumbfounded the other day listening to military men, police officers and firefighters call in and then be forced to shut up and hear David's advice to them on gun safety!! Today he went from his (anit?) abortion views (I wasn't totally sure) to kids being raised by the DMV to how he could look at a child and tell what kind of medication he is on. What kind of medication is David on!! He creeps me out with his old cheesy man "cool" sayings. And uuuuuuuuhhhh "You agree or disagree" his questions are so obtuse you can do neither but sit and wonder why his mother didn't smother him when he first came out. Horrible and frustrating. At least if Clear Channel was going to take away my favorite show ever they could put on someone pleasant. News to elevator music would be a welcome change.

Shot that fuck up you sons a bitches... He is really good. and let's face it he lived the rock stars Life that most of us just dream off... I do prefered to listening to him that Stearn... Yo and I'm in this shit hole Venezuela ... I'm glad that that he is on radio and I can hook up over the internet... you know WHO Really SUCKSSSS... CHAVEZZZZ... every fucking day he is on TV or radio... Try that!!!

Posted by: clark at February 27, 2006 04:56 PM

94 WYSP in Philly has talk radio all day. I listen to it the entire day EXCEPT for the abortion that is DLR's show. I have attempted to listen to him but it is painfully bad. I've actually started listening to Star and Bucwild on a rap station, a show I previously hated when Stern was on.

Posted by: Cindy at March 2, 2006 04:54 PM

All you complainers seem to want Roth to be another Stern clone. If you'd listen to the show on its own terms, you'd hear it for what it really is: a strangely original radio show, built around a strangely original personality.

Say what you will about Roth, but there is nothing like the guy anywhere else on radio. Before he debuted, I was sure I'd hate the show. But he's turned out to much better--and weirder!--than I expected. And he really is getting better every week.

Posted by: Brian at March 8, 2006 02:23 PM

OK,... i get it,. he can speak a few phrases in Spanish, enough already. I tried to give him a chance, really, but what the hell is he thinking? Could you imagine having a conversation with this guy, and he talks like that, overpowering his guests with what to think. He's the only one i see that takes over an interview than gets his guest to comment on HIS thoughts.
oh, and one more thing, i really need to hear, just once more, how he's 51, but his X-rays are 71 yrs; old...Sorry Dave, i gotta go.

Posted by: Jim McVeigh at March 9, 2006 04:19 PM

This show is awesome... The same people that think the show sucks would have thought Stern sucked when he was first on... good radio hosts develop a style over time, and David is doing an awesome job. Great show; I listen every day from San Antonio on the net...

Posted by: Jay at March 10, 2006 09:44 AM

Cindy posted "Say what you will about Roth, but there is nothing like the guy anywhere else on radio". Thank goodness!!! It's not entertaining, it's not funny, and it will be over soon.

Posted by: Rafa Marquez at March 10, 2006 10:10 PM

Apologists argue that it takes time for a radio host to develope his personality and show. Yeah, it's called having a radio host career before syndication. What was CBS thinking? They thought they could replace one of the biggest names in the history of radio with someone with absolutely no experience. Every successful radio host has had substantial radio experience before being syndicated. DLR getting his show is like the Los Angeles Lakers signing Tiger Woods as their starting point guard since his been so successful as a professional in another venue and he has many fans.

Posted by: Carles Puyol at March 10, 2006 10:24 PM

What about the latest Roth rant regarding him not wanting to change his show, format, music, etc. Who does he think he is in this business all of a sudden? Tom Giasano has probably had 3 hours of sleep since January 3rd. Roth needs replaced if for no other reason, for the well being of Tom for Christ sake. If you take a job and two months in you set the terms for the type of work you do, what do you think is going to happen?

Posted by: Hotel Herman at March 11, 2006 03:14 AM

I have tried and tried again to listen to this show. I keep thinking that it might get better over time. I have decided that as much as it's changed since it's debut it's never actually going to be listenable. I don't care that it's not Stern. I just wanted something that would be tolerable. Thanks to this egomaniacal jerk off I have discovered the car kit for my iPod. It was either that or gouge out my ears with Q-Tips. I think I made the better choice.

Also when I'm not listening to that or NPR, I've found Springer on the Radio to be a nice and tolerable alternative. Never thought I'd say that but at 9am, it's worth checking out.

This show is so bad I'm not sure if words can describe it. DLR is not funny, not entertaining and the rest of the crew on the show sit there and laugh just for the sake of laughing. Its a complete train wreck. I used to listen to 94.1 WYSP throughout the day...Now I can't remember the last time I had that station on since the morning show is so bad, I never switch back to it....How long till this torture is over???? ....DLR is like one of those 50 year old guys who still hangs in the club/bar scene who thinks he's "hip"..but really, everyone else there is laughing at him.....

Posted by: mikeinpa at March 23, 2006 07:28 AM

Nice try Mr. Roth, but your hip aged rock star schtick was interesting for a week.

If I hear him say "Play it B. Young, Baby!" while that numbnuts noodles boringly over canned loops I will scream.

It's like being in school with that know-it-all teacher who tells the same war stories over and over. Interesting initially, but eventually tedious.

Posted by: at March 28, 2006 09:24 PM

The show is HORRIBLE. He always cracks the same lame jokes or says the same stupid sayings. the same "b young be bad" and the same reference to the "rythm section" and asking EVERY guest if they woke up or stayed up for the interview, doesn't ask anything controversial even if he says he is...He had k-fag...I mean k-fed on and didn't even ask him how good britney was in bed, come on now. You can get the same lame ass-kissing interviews on one of the suck up Clear Channel stations. He's said 1 funny thing since he's been on. 1. Viacomm must be happy with their choice...

Here's the deal, Roth is a complete mess!! Whether it was too many drugs or not enough sunlight over the years he's beyond help at this point... We all loved VH growing up, but I think for most his act has grown old!! I had hoped his show would be interesting, but I think, esp. after this format change, he'd better start looking for a new day job!!

Wouldn't it be amusing to find out that some of the people praising David on this message board were non other than David Lee Roth himself? Gosh, he would have to be in a really sad place to pretend people actually like him. After listening to his program, as someone else put it, I also acknowledge he doesn't connect with his guests, he just succeeds at being arrogant like "mom, look at me, look at me mom!" and how he manages to make his guest invisible sure hope his mom sees how much smarter he is than the guests who wrote the books, or made the movies about things he knows so much more about. Wasn't he cleaning floors and toilets as a janitor for a while? Maybe it isn't his moms attention he's trying so hard for, maybe he is trying to reach out to Eddie Van Halan, who carried his talantless ass for so long.

Posted by: ?David at April 13, 2006 09:07 PM

One word for DLR - UNLISTENABLE!!! I did not know what to expect with the Stern departure, but I did not in my wildest dreams expect something this inane and so hauntingly uninteresting. I was a occasional Stern listener, finding him amusing, even thought provoking, on the odd day - but it was mainly the kind of introspection one derives when watching a chimp eat its own feaces. But David Lee Roth, if anything, is driving more "undecideds" like myself to lament the absence of Stern. I find every minute of Dave's voice on the radio to be simply nauseating - the pseudo "man of the world" bravado, the moronic entourage, the nonsensical banter - somehow when Stern did it he managed to salvage the segment, or at least his self-depracating humor gave you something to smile about - Dave is just an absolute trainwreck...it befuddles me that there are highly paid executives at CBS who thought this actually had a shot, and who didn't pull the plug 15 minutes into Dave's first show. Having Dave pollute our free airwaves with his brainfarts is a far bigger transgression than Stern's fart contests ever were.

Posted by: Sam at April 13, 2006 10:17 PM

I am so glad there are others of you out there who are waiting for the moment when Roth is taken off of the air and replaced with someone who actually has talent.

He has no business whatsoever being on the radio. I really HATE when he starts singing or when he says things that may have been cool in his day but are now a sign of the aging unchanging relic that he is. I hate the music tracks he plays. That music is just terrible. Really. He sings over it in such a gratuitous manner that I wonder if he even lives in the same world as I do.

Since he came on the air, I have discovered NPR on 93.9 and 105.1 (I think) the Star and Buckwild show. And mind you, I am not african american. The show on 105.1 is often degrading to white people. Why would I listen to this??? Because it is better than David Lee Roth ten-fold.

The few bright moments in morning radio on 92.3 Free (KROCK has sucked for years now anyway) have been when JV and Elvis took over. That is a halfway decent show with interesting guests and an interesting cast. By no means is it a Howard Stern clone. I guess it proves that you don't have to be a Stern clone to be good radio. Agree or Disagree?

Posted by: Leif at April 14, 2006 12:14 AM

Dear God...I have tried so hard to like this show, but DLR is about as much fun as inhaling fiberglass residue. The way he makes his random "deep" comments, pauses, turns up the radio and then yells admiring himself, drives me up the F'n wall. I turn the radio on today only to hear him asking a rancher from Oaklahoma about his life...who wants to hear that? I'm all for the free style radio he's trying to achieve, but for the love of Pete, if you plan on talking about wallpaper paste, don't expect anyone to listen.

Posted by: at April 20, 2006 07:22 PM

Russ Martin completely sucks. The show consists of 10-second blocks of dead space punctuated by unintelligible off-microphone comments. Listen for any 10 minutes at a time and I defy you to know what the hell is actually going on, much less actually laugh at what is going on.

Posted by: Dallas listener at April 23, 2006 04:50 PM

Dave was such a welcome change from Stern. How anyone can listen to Stern and his cheesy strip show is beyond comprehension. It is a sad commentary on our society.

At least Dave had interesting guests and spoke intelligibly about topics. He was also put in the impossible position trying to replace Stern. Anyone would have failed. Unfortunately it was DLR.

Posted by: at April 24, 2006 09:36 AM

thank god that asshole DLR is off the radio. he is back where he belongs, on his ass with no audience. i wonder what the morning drive suicide rate of free fm listeners was under his reign.
