RIP, Eric Gregg

Former baseball umpire Eric Gregg, who enjoyed an unlikely second career as a local celebrity and man-about-town in his hometown of Philadelphia, has died at the age of 55. I'll always remember Gregg as the ump during one of the many brawls enjoyed by the 1986 Mets, and I once saw him in person (though did not meet him) at the most recent Wing Bowl. He sounds like he was a great guy who will be very much missed.

I met Eric Gregg twice. The first time was at Chickie's and Pete's in the Northeast, where he was working the door. I recognized him (naturally my sister did not) and chatted with him about the (then breaking) steroid scandal. The second time was just a few weeks ago at Citizen's Bank Park, where he was once again working Chickie's and Pete's, and I took a picture with him on my cell phone ... and the memory was full. D'OH! Well, I will always have those memories of the gregarious Eric Gregg.
