The Last Whack

Wow. I almost feel like I can't comment on Sunday's "Sopranos" series finale until I've watched it a second time and read the recaps from all of my favorite bloggers. But I can say this: I unquestionably loved the whole episode until the last two minutes, and even the last two minutes I'm not quite sure about. I do know David Chase has never been about giving the audience exactly what it wants, or doing everything predictably, and I suppose this just took that attitude to the logical extreme. And no, I'm not disappointed that he didn't go with any of my proposed endings, although there was a hint of the Whitey Bulger ending in the Agent Harris/Phil subplot.

No, there will not be a movie. No, the DVD will not have all the answers to what happened in that diner. And yes, there may be clues as to how it ended (that whole "you never see it coming" conversation between Tony and Bobby). But clues aren't absolute.

Here's my new North Star column, about the end of the series. I'll be back with more commentary tomorrow; in the meantime, don't stop/believing.

I can't say I was disappointed with that ending than confused as to what David Chase was thinking. But from now on when I heard Don't Stop Beliveing, I will always think of this ending. FYI:My sister told me that Holsteen's ran out of onions rings around 6PM tonight. 3,000 onion rings worth!

I think the blackout at the end was David Chase's big F-you to his audience - everyone I have talked to thought the cable went out at that second.

I think people are getting unjustly angry at David Chase, a man who has given them one of the best shows in american history over 6 seasons. He ended the show on his own terms, and in doing so, he left his iconic characters, as they always were, to remain in the American consciousness. If Tony were whacked, or turned, or even went to jail, it would almost ruin what he had become as a character.

Although the best thing I heard from an annoyed fan was, "Its like he was jerking us off for 8 years, and in that last scene we were so close, and then he just walked away without finishing."

So there you have it. The Sopranos Finale = Blue Balls.
