Farewell, Jehuda

News Item: Jehuda Reinharz steps down as president of Brandeis University

President for my alma mater for the past 15 years, Jehuda leaves behind a decidedly mixed legacy. Yes, the university grew more prestigious in his years at the helm, but he significantly mishandled quite a few controversies, most notably the Donald Hindley/"wetback" mess and more recently, the Rose Art Museum debacle and everything that followed it.

An interesting sidebar- Reinharz resigned today, and plans to take charge of a nonprofit. But no such nonprofit was named, and Reinharz said he would stay on until June 2011- a date nearly two years away- while also volunteering to remain on "a very part-time basis between 2011 and 2014." Reinharz must have the same retirement adviser as Bud Selig.

Agreed on the mixed legacy point... as for the timing, it's typical for university presidents to make announcements like this with significant leadtime so that a proper search for a new president may take place. A lot of large non-profits operate in the same way, so it's not at all surprising that the groups Jehuda is apparently speaking with are already working to fill jobs that won't be open for a couple of years.

As for the "part-time" stuff after 2011, I can only guess that he's talking about helping with development/fundraising (though I'm a little skeptical as to the quality of the assistance he would be able to give in that area, saying as how he's probably alienated a fair number of donors with the gaffes that you mention).

I had forgotten/never known about that Hindley thing, but the article you link to fails to mention a certain imbroglio involving Dusty Baker and a certain cartoon tiger.
